Cultural Program
The city of Coimbra, located on a hill by the Mondego River, was called Aeminium in Roman Times. The Roman founded the civitas of Aeminium in this place at the time of emperor Augustus (63 BC-AD 14). The city came under the protection and administrative influence of nearby larger city of Conímbriga (some 15 kilometres / 9.3 mi to the south). Between 465 and 468 AD, during the barbaric invasions, Conímbriga, was sacked by the Sueves and Visigoths. With the destruction of the city of Conímbriga, itsinhabitants ultimately abandoned the city, and much of them fled to nearby city Aeminium. The original name of their town was kept and Aeminium eventually become Conímbriga… and ultimately Coimbra.
In the XII century Coimbra become the first capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255). The Mondego River, which saw the creation of the city of Coimbra was always an important part of its inhabitants’ lives. Mondego River is the longest river entirely within Portuguese territory. It has its source in Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal.
During the late Middle Ages Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural centre. This was in large part helped by the establishment of the first Portuguese university in 1290 in Lisbon and its relocation to Coimbra in 1308, making the University of Coimbra one of the oldest academic institutions in the world: until the end of the 13th century, it is part of a small group of 15 operating universities in Europe. After a period of alternation between the cities of Lisbon and Coimbra, the definite transference occurs in 1537.
